Let me start by saying I’m a novice turner. I took a class at a Rockler once and got to use a nice lathe and learn some basics and I’ve turned a handful of projects on my Woodstarter lathe, but I’m by no means an expert. I’ve done a lot of research and watched a lot of youtube turning videos so I know a little bit, but don’t have decades of experience like some turners.
First Impressions: Precision You Can Feel
I may not have a lot of experience turning, but I have handled a ton of tools and machined parts and I know a quality tool when I see one. When you lay your hands on this lathe chuck you can immediately tell the high level of precision that went into machining this tool and you can feel the quality materials. It’s got a great heft to it and every single component and thread works together seamlessly and so smoothly. I get a great sense of satisfaction when something goes together well and this thing does that extremely well! It’s like it was made by NASA.
A Versatile and Adaptable Chuck System
Besides being machined very precisely, this lathe chuck set is extremely adaptable. There are several different jaws included, and most of the jaw sets have a bunch of adjustability themselves.
- Theres a large flat/plate jaw with several pins to setup whatever size and shape you may need.
- There’s a large round jaw for big bowls or logs or things like that.
- There’s a step jaw that can fit different sized mortices without making any adjustments.
- A smaller round jaw looks like it will be ideal for smaller bowls or projects with around a 2-inch tenon.
- And then a pin jaw that clamps down to just under a half inch.
Obviously all of these jaws can clamp inward or brace outward as well.
Perfect for Beginners and Experts Alike
This chuck is excellent for beginners and experts alike. It’s self-centering so you don’t have to worry about your piece being clamped off to one side. It has great clamping force in part thanks to a very well made chuck key that can slot into 2 different large holes and easily open or close the jaws. It also has some alignment guides to make sure you’re getting the jaws attached properly.
My Turning Projects and Future Plans
I’m sure this chuck kit can do a whole bunch of stuff I’m not even aware of yet and I can’t wait to keep learning more uses for it. So far I’ve used it to make a bottle opener and a baby rattle. The next project I’d love to make with it is a small bowl, and after that I’d love to use the worm screw and practice turning larger, live edge materials into bowls or vases to make beautiful decorations.
Final Verdict: A High-Quality Lathe Upgrade
This lathe chuck really expands the versatility of a lathe and it’s extremely high quality. If you’re getting into turning or just want a great accessory for your lathe, definitely check out this gem from Woodstarter!
